2. Mechanical vibration
The focus here is on mechanical movements and jolts transmitted directly to the body of operators in contact with a machine via handles, steering wheel or joysticks, seat or even floor. A distinction is made between vibrations transmitted to the upper limbs, such as when using a jackhammer or sander, and vibrations transmitted to the whole body, when driving off-road vehicles for example.
To assess the severity of vibration exposure, we calculate the equivalent acceleration (a eq ), which is the effective value of the acceleration measured at the point of entry into the body (handle for a tool or seat for a seated driver), weighted to take account of human sensitivity and averaged over the duration of actual daily exposure.
