5. Cost of occupational hazards
As we have seen in the preceding paragraphs, poor safety conditions result in direct damage and indirect consequences, which in turn generate direct and indirect costs.
5.1 Direct cost
This is the best-known part of the cost of risks; it corresponds to expenditure to repair the damage suffered by employees who are victims of occupational accidents or illnesses. These expenses are covered by the Social Security system, and include healthcare costs (consultation, hospitalization, prescriptions, etc.), daily allowances and annuities paid in the event of permanent disability or death.
