5. Reliability-based maintenance (RBM) methods

5.1 Origins and applications

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) was developed in the aerospace industry with the aim of guaranteeing the operational reliability of equipment at its design level, and preventing failures through preventive maintenance techniques. MBF focuses on identifying critical equipment whose failure could have serious consequences for the company's objectives (safety, availability, costs, maintainability, quality, etc.). In order to be able to select only critical equipment, the various international standards or best practices adopted in industrial sectors propose methods for assessing their criticality.
