The operational availability of a complex industrial system depends heavily on the reliability of its constituent components. These components, made of a wide variety of materials (metals, composites, concrete, ceramics, etc.), undergo a gradual degradation of their initial characteristics over their lifecycle as a result of operating conditions and their environment.
