Stabilization is any modification of a material designed to increase its chemical stability under given conditions. Stabilization can be :
internally, it is the very structure of the polymer that is modified by copolymerization, grafting, substitution, etc. ;
external; it is provided by additives generally incorporated during shaping, possibly in the form of a masterbatch.
Internal stabilization is mainly used to slow down or inhibit the thermal degradation of polymers breaking down in chain reactions.
