 INTRODUCTION

The termepoxide refers to a wide variety of prepolymers containing one or more epoxy units which, after polycondensation with a hardener, lead to thermoset products whose main applications are bonding and composite materials (epoxy matrix with glass or carbon fiber reinforcements).

These high-performance products can be used in a wide range of applications, some of which are of an undeniably high technical level:

  • aerospace and automotive industries (structural and panel bonding);

  • medium- and high-voltage electrical industry (mainly switchgear) ;

  • electronics (capacitor coating, printed circuit board manufacture, etc.);

  • sports (skis, snowshoes, bows and arrows, carbon bicycle frames, lenticular wheels...);

  • tools (reproduction models, master models, core boxes, etc.) ;

  • laminates and composites (honeycombs, triangular structures, drive shafts, sports car bodies...);

  • chemical-resistant coatings, dam crack repair, etc.

Note :

This article describes the chemistry of epoxy resins and their main properties. Processing techniques, various controls and applications are the subject of the next article. .

Bibliographical references, epoxy resin manufacturers and their specific standards are given in .
