10. Conclusions and outlook

The challenges specific to the extrusion blow-molding of large hollow bodies were reviewed, and the technical solutions for solving them were detailed: extruders, multi-layer or accumulation heads, thickness control devices, blow molds and post-cooling devices for geometry control. Finishing methods and product inspection were also discussed.

Far from being static, technology is constantly evolving to meet the ever-growing needs of an increasingly demanding industry and market. Key trends for the years ahead include :

  • the development of multi-layer tanks, mentioned in paragraph 4.3, which, following the market introduction of alcoholic gasolines (ethanol content of 5% to 10% for standard blends, rising to 85% or even 100% for special fuels), will gradually replace the less efficient surface treatment by fluorination;...
