2. Improving the fire behavior of composites

2.1 Component properties

A composite material can be described as a heterogeneous material with two or more components consisting of a reinforcing phase (e.g. fibers), which gives the material its mechanical properties, and a matrix, whose role is to bind the reinforcing phase. In this dossier, we will focus on composites made from fibers and a polymer matrix, in particular a thermosetting resin, although the methods presented can also be applied to thermoplastic-based composites.
