6. Formula optimization considerations

Although the choice of plasticizer is relatively limited, it is important to select it in such a way as to obtain the greatest benefits. This paragraph is intended to facilitate optimization – particularly from an economic point of view – of the ingredients of a formula containing a plasticizer.

6.1 Search for a technically acceptable formulation

The formulator (possibly assisted by a computer program) can quickly propose a basic formula which, from experience, satisfies most of the requirements of the specification (generally, tensile properties at imposed speed). A few factors then need to be modified to meet additional requirements, and the full range of solutions studied. The choice of plasticizer mix is often the key.
