2. Laminating theories
Understanding of the plasticization mechanism has improved over time, but many phenomena are still only partially quantified. This is because the polymers that bind the relatively simple plasticizer molecules are complex assemblies comprising, in the case of semi-crystalline polymers, crystalline and amorphous domains that react differently to plasticizers.
2.1 Lubrication theory
Lubrication theory postulates that the plasticizer, by insertion between two polymer chains, reduces interchain bonding forces.
