Overview

ABSTRACT

Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) are polymers presenting a chain of phenyl compounds with an oxygen bridge-bond and carbonyls or Ketons. The PAEKs are at the head of a set of polymers elaborated from extremely stable phenyl compounds. The main characteristic of these materials is their resistance to temperatures of above 250°C under continuous use. These polymers are renowned for being the only ones which can be used as a last resort where all the others have turned out to be unsuitable. The development prospects of the PAEK are extremely favorable, as the growth is of around 15% per year, with a strong presence in the aeronautic, automotive, electronic and energy sectors.

 INTRODUCTION

Polyaryletherketones (PAEK for polyaryletherketone) are polymers comprising a chain of phenyl compounds bridged by oxygen and carbonyl groups, or ketones.

PAEKs head a group of polymers based on highly stable phenyl compounds. The main ones are :

  • PEEK, polyetheretherketone, by far the most important ;

  • PEK, polyetherketone ;

  • PEEKK, polyetherketoneketone ;

  • PEKEKK, polyetherketoneetherketoneketone ;

  • PEKK, polyaryletherketone.

All these materials are often considered more as different grades of the same broad family than as very distinct materials.

The main characteristic of these materials is their resistance to very high temperatures, in continuous use over 250°C. These are the polymers with the reputation of being used as a last resort when all others have proved inadequate.
