13. Glossary

The few definitions given below are taken either from directives 2014/34/EU (ATEX), or from standard NF EN 1127-1. This standard is a general guide for the design and construction of equipment, protective systems and components. In this standard, the terms flammable and combustible are synonymous.

Atmosphère explosible; potentially explosive atmosphere

Atmosphere liable to become explosive under local and operational conditions.

Atmosphère explosive; explosive atmosphere

A mixture with air, under atmospheric conditions, of flammable substances in the form of gases, vapors, mists or dusts in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture.
