5. Harmonized standards

According to the European Council's resolution on the new approach, with regard to technical harmonization and standards, the following task has been entrusted to the standards bodies:

"Establish the technical specifications necessary for the production and marketing of products that comply with the essential requirements laid down by the directives, taking into account the state of the art.

These technical specifications are not mandatory, and their status as voluntary standards is maintained. This means that the manufacturer has the option of not building a product in conformity with these standards, but in this eventuality, he is obliged to prove that his product complies with the essential requirements of the directive.
