2. Quantifying leak frequencies: a necessity for quantified risk analyses

2.1 A reminder of risk quantification

Risk quantification involves assessing the probability and severity of accidents. The latter is generally based on an assessment of effect distances, followed by a count of impacted targets. The assessment of probability is increasingly based on the implementation of methodologies requiring the use of databases. Figure 1 provides a simplified overview of the various stages involved in a risk quantification process.
