1. Processes for the thermochemical conversion of biomass

Thermochemical biomass conversion involves heating biomass to high temperatures in a non-oxidizing atmosphere (or under stoichiometric conditions in the case of partial oxidation).

Broadly speaking, three types of thermochemical biomass conversion processes are being developed at pressures close to ambient pressure. Slow heating results in slow pyrolysis, which primarily leads to the formation of charcoal. For faster heating rates, rapid pyrolysis occurs, which primarily results in the formation of bio-oil [G 1 455]
