4. Transport phenomena

Various approaches can be used to describe matter transfer in electrodialysis. These are essentially the thermodynamic approach, based on the description of equilibria between the phases (membrane material and electrolyte solution) and the kinetic approach, incorporating forced convection due to the application of an electrical potential gradient. However, the mechanisms governing matter transfer are not yet fully elucidated [4] .
