6. Conclusion

This paper provides a non-exhaustive overview of the key parameters to be taken into account in the early stages of internal combustion engine development. The central position occupied by the choice of crankstar has been explained, using the 16-cylinder V-type engine as an example. The impact of this choice is directly reflected in engine dynamics and therefore performance, via a number of aspects, such as firing order, balancing of forces and mass moments, etc. For some critical situations, and depending on the progress of the project, technical solutions were also proposed.

For a final assessment of the potential candidates resulting from this first crankstar pre-selection phase and the associated ignition sequences, more detailed simulations will be required. Multi-body simulations followed by crankshaft fatigue calculations, engine block vibration level assessment...
