3. Low-pressure gas sealing

3.1 Mechanical seal configuration for gases

As gas is a poor lubricant, it is preferable to avoid direct surface contact during seal operation. To achieve this, one side of the seal (usually the rotor) is equipped with spiral grooves, as shown in figure 9 . These grooves, which are around ten microns deep, generate additional aerodynamic pressure in the gas film, allowing the surfaces to separate.
