Overview

ABSTRACT

In order to be operational, an automaton must include the three functions of the information chain: acquisition, processing and communication. This system is capable of coordinating a series of actions if the components have been cabled and programed in order to carry out the desired operation. The aim of this article is to detail the technologies of the information chain and present the various automation components involved. The knowledge of the basic notions concerning the management of start and stop procedures as well as the standardization of symbols for the elaboration of pneumatic circuit diagrams is essential.

 INTRODUCTION

The functions of the information chain are: acquisition, processing, and communication. These interconnected and coordinated functions enable the creation of an "automated system" capable of coordinating the sequence of actions in the operational phase according to a set of specifications. This "automated system" is built using components that are wired or programmed to perform the operations required by the specifications. The creation of an automated system (control section) requires two types of studies:

  • the study of the components and elements of information processing;

  • the review of the programs to be developed and/or the wiring diagrams.

The purpose of this document is to outline the various technologies used in the construction of the information chain and the associated selection criteria. We will then examine the basic concepts of managing the start and stop modes of an automated system, and finally, the essential concepts involved in designing pneumatic circuit diagrams.

This document expands on the description of automated batch processing systems [BM 6 110] and details the procedures for generating orders to be sent to the components of the operational system [BM 6 111] .

Readers will find a glossary in the glossary section that defines the technical terms used in this text.
