7. Transient Liquid Phase
Transient Liquid Phase (TLP) is a variant of diffusion welding, since it involves atomic diffusion mechanisms. Two metallic materials are brought into contact and heated to a temperature that allows atomic migration from one material to the other. Diffusion of the alloying elements present in the base metals creates a bonding alloy (eutectic phase), the thickness of which depends on the solubility of the elements present. This reactive layer becomes the brazing filler metal. It has a lower melting point than the parent materials.
This technique makes it possible to join metallic materials that are known to be difficult to join using conventional brazing, as well as metallic materials with ceramics.
