2.1 Chip removal process
Regardless of the machining process involved, the material removal process involves the mechanical action of the cutting tool on the material. This process requires a significant amount of energy. The machined part (the material) and the cutting part (the tool) are then subjected to different mechanical, thermal, chemical, and tribological loads (Figure 2 ).
