7. Permitted tolerance level according to production methods
Once the design office has determined the dimensional characteristics and tolerances, it must ensure that its requirements are feasible in terms of manufacturing, measurement, and inspection.
To do this, the following is required:
the measurement uncertainty is relatively low in relation to the tolerance, or take it into account in the conformity decision (see ISO 14253-1);
the variability of manufacturing processes is compatible with the required tolerance (concept of capability indicator).
The permissible macrogeometric tolerances (dimensional and/or geometric) according to manufacturing processes are generally related to a nominal dimension linked to the element in question, the material, or even a general tolerance quality or other parameters....
