Overview

ABSTRACT

The experimental protocol of abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining proposed and validated on an isotropic component (aluminum) is adapted to composite materials. This article highlights two major differences linked to the effect of the AWJ between composite and aluminum, namely machinability and variability. The machinability of composite materials being greater than that of aluminum for the AWJ, different machining parameters are selected for composites. Several models concerning the optimal abrasive flow and the feed rate according to cutting parameters are proposed, as well as a unique model applicable to both materials. To conclude, the relevance of the machining process and of models in industrial applications is illustrated.
