Numerical modelling of FSW welding is a complex problem involving strong physical couplings, in particular between mechanics, thermics and metallurgy. .

FSW welding is a material-free process in which heat is generated solely by the dissipation induced by the mixing of the base material and its intense friction on the tool. The tool is driven in rotation and translation along the joint to be welded, as shown in figure
