    ABSTRACT

    Surface functionalization with thin or ultra-thin organic layers is of fundamental importance to design materials with tailored properties or with operating functions. The robustness of the interface is crucial for developing practical applications. In this context, the chemisorption methods display superior feature. Among them, the reductive grafting of aryldiazonium salts is an attractive method but suffers from the difficulty to control the grafting of ultrathin layers. After a description highlighting advantages and drawbacks of the diazonium grafting method, we will present an innovative and versatile ?diazonium? approach using pre-organized scaffold, calix[4]arene. This leads to the formation of highly robust and densely-packed monolayers on a large range of materials. Further, the introduction of functional objects can be performed with a fine spatial control at the molecular scale through adequate decoration of the calixarene platform.
