4. Outlook

Surface finish is an increasingly important part of the additive manufacturing value chain. This is mainly due to the effect of roughness on the final mechanical properties of the part, but also to its impact on surface cleanliness and compatibility with subsequent surface treatments.

Manufacturers of additive manufacturing machines are well aware of these shortcomings. They are therefore working to improve manufacturing techniques in order to enhance the surface finish of parts leaving the machine. That said, it is unlikely that surface finishing will ever be completely dispensed with.
