1. General presentation
The radiation that individual dosimeters are designed to measure is multiple and of different kinds (mainly photon radiation, but also β radiation (e – ) and neutrons) in energy ranges that can vary widely, from a few keV to several tens of MeV for γ radiation, from a few eV to a few MeV for neutrons, and from 500 keV for β radiation.
The medical field is concerned with X-rays (< 150 keV) and photons from a few keV to several MeV, while the reactor field is more concerned with γ above 100 keV and the fuel cycle with γ from 10 keV to a few MeV. What's more, the various fields encountered in radiation protection are often at the cutting edge of technical progress and themselves driven to evolve, sometimes creating different radiative environment conditions.
