5. Radiation protection

Radiation protection (RP) is defined as "protection against ionizing radiation". We distinguish between external exposure (irradiation from a source outside the body) and internal exposure (from a source inside the body). The term "contamination" refers to a situation where a source is fixed in contact with the body.

5.1 Sources

In a nuclear power plant, there are three types of radionuclides that emit ionizing radiation: fission products, actinides and activation products.
