1.1 Special features of nuclear power plants

"A nuclear power plant is designed to provide competitive electrical energy in today's economic climate. However, it contains radioactive products which are therefore a danger to the environment". This sentence, taken from the Memento de la sûreté nucléaire en exploitation, sets out quite well the two main, sometimes divergent, constraints that will define the necessary quality of both programmed and non-programmed systems.
