2. Phase equilibrium: approaches and models

2.1 Gibbs free enthalpy

If we calculate the Gibbs free enthalpy for a binary mixture (at a given T and P), two cases may arise (figure 1 ). Case a corresponds to a temperature and pressure pair where no equilibrium occurs. Case b involves equilibrium between phases. The compositions of the two phases can be read on the graph (in x 1 and x 2 ).
