2. Impact of biomass on the greenhouse effect

Biomass can have a positive or negative impact on the greenhouse effect, depending on its nature (i.e. dead or growing) and its use (i.e. deforestation or sustainable management, timber, energy wood...). To properly measure the impact of combustion on greenhouse gas emissions, it is essential to take into account not only emissions during the combustion phase, but also avoided emissions, due to the substitution of fossil fuels by biomass, and finally upstream contributions linked to the life cycle (felling, transport, energy consumption of installations, etc.).
