15. Nuclear energy
Nuclear power enables us to produce a lot of energy with little fuel, at a price that remains stable over time for a given generation of reactors. This is because the price of uranium has little impact on the price per kWh. If, for example, the price of uranium is multiplied by 10, the price per kWh increases by less than 40%. In the case of natural gas, it would increase by a factor of 7 if the price of natural gas rose by a factor of 10. We saw the effect of this in Europe in 2022, with an explosion in the price of electricity, the price of which was set, according to European rules, by the price per kWh produced by the last thermal power plant commissioned to balance the grid. This was a gas-fired plant.
