3. Coal storage and preservation problems

3.1 Oxidation phenomenon

Oxidation is a slow phenomenon that affects all solid fuels as soon as their surface is exposed to air.

At room temperature, a coal exposed to air binds oxygen more or less rapidly, releasing carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and water vapor. The most oxygen-rich coals are the most oxidizable. The reaction of oxygen on coal, below the combustion threshold, is "exothermic" and produces heat.
