Overview

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to deal with various closure types used for buildings. Closures for housing, or closures for bays equipped with windows, are to be differentiated from free bays. Indeed, the first category concerns rolling, hinged, and slatted shutters, etc., while the second includes all doors used for the passage of vehicles, such as garage doors or doors for industrial premises. Metallic shutters are included in this category, even though they are used for the passage of individuals and not vehicles. This article examines the main performance requirements of both categories.

AUTHOR

  • Hervé LAMY : French Building Federation - Responsible for technical issues at the French National Association for Closure, Solar Protection and Associated Professions (SNFPSA).

 INTRODUCTION

In the past, all definitions and designations relating to building closures were covered by a single standard (NF P 25-101), but this is no longer the case, as national texts have been replaced by European standards.

The European working groups carried out their work separately, even though they were covered by the same technical committee (CEN/TC33).

It is now necessary to separate :

  • Closures for openings fitted with windows, more commonly referred to as "residential closures", such as roller shutters, swing shutters, blinds, etc,

    and

  • industrial, commercial and garage doors, formerly referred to as "open bay doors". This category includes all doors whose main function is to allow the passage of vehicles. Examples include garage doors, doors installed in industrial premises, etc. Grilles and metal curtains installed on store fronts, for example, fall into this category, even if their main purpose is to allow the passage of people, not vehicles. Normative and regulatory considerations, particularly in terms of safety, make it more consistent to treat these products in the same way as vehicle doors.

Note: although they are covered by the same working group and share certain common standards, solar protection devices such as interior and exterior blinds are not considered as closures.

It should be noted that, under the Decree of December 21, 1993 on automatic and semi-automatic doors and gates in the workplace, the term "vehicle" includes "vehicles covered by the Highway Code and self-propelled trucks".
