1. Composite materials

In a general sense, any raw material containing fillers can be referred to as a composite. However, in this treatise, this term is currently reserved for materials comprising a reinforcement in filamentary form [1] .

Note :

Concrete made from aggregates and cement paste and reinforced concrete are considered as composite materials in civil engineering.

The former is a composite material made up of two complementary, immiscible elements. In the second case, it's a composite consisting of a binder, called matrix, the concrete, and a reinforcement of long fibers, the steel bars. The fiber part — the steel bars — provides the tensile mechanical properties, while the binder called matrix in composites,...
