1. Limestone and limestone stone

To talk about lime, we first need to talk about the raw material: limestone.

Without limestone, there's no lime.

Limestone is raw, lime is cooked.

Limestones are sedimentary rocks that are very abundant in the superficial constitution of our earth's crust. They are composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and, to a lesser extent, magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 ). When these rocks include a non-negligible proportion of clays, terminologies such as "calcareous marl" or "argillaceous limestone" are used.
