Injecting a gas into the groundwater to volatilize volatile compounds (air sparging) is a technique that has been widely used for the last ten years or so in cases where the soil has a simple geology (figure 1 ). This technique often competes with groundwater pumping and other in situ groundwater treatments. Air sparging is frequently coupled with venting (§ 34 ).
