Overview
ABSTRACT
Tramways have enjoyed a certain revival over the last few years and have become increasingly well implanted in France. This type of urban or interurban public transportation is effected on railways which are built into the road infrastructure. The externally powered electric traction remains the standard propulsion mode of urban tramways. This choice is explained by the technical and environmental advantages which are characteristic of such a traction mode such as low operating noise, absence of any atmospheric pollution and powerful acceleration. Furthermore, the design of this rolling stock has been the object of advanced studies notably in terms of accessibility and passenger comfort.
