Overview

ABSTRACT

Retaining structures involve the use of relatively complex technical matters. They depend on a large number of parameters, including structure, land and even atmospheric conditions. When they are not sufficiently mastered, all these uncertainties can generate more or less severe disorders. Retaining structures are thus subjected to risks. Generally, the pathologies of retaining structures generate significant damage: material and sometimes bodily. The knowledge and experience of the pathology of reinforcement structures allow for the assessment of risk and constraints to be taken into consideration in order to prevent or address it.

 INTRODUCTION

Although various types of disorder that can affect retaining walls have already been examined (see [C 6 200] ), – they have only been examined in the more general context of pathologies affecting reinforced concrete structures. On that occasion, we also indicated that certain categories of structures would be the subject of a more detailed study.

Retaining walls fall into this category. Their stability may depend on a large number of parameters – some of which may be poorly controlled – leading to accidents which, although fortunately few in number, can result in significant material damage or even personal injury.
