7. Conclusion

In this study, we have attempted to classify the various pathologies affecting retaining walls by technical origin, on the basis of the disorders that have come to our attention. This is a difficult and sometimes delicate exercise, as the causes are often multiple, and the part played by each is sometimes uncertain.

In conclusion, however, the most frequent causes are as follows:

  • the absence of studies, especially for common walls;

  • water, the number one enemy of retaining walls (hence the importance of drainage);

  • data errors during the design phase, due in particular to the absence or inadequacy of soil surveys (base soil and/or retained soil);

  • modifications subsequent to construction....
