Overview

ABSTRACT

The center of gravity of a considered element is the point of application of the resultant of the forces of gravity or of gravity. It depends on the gravitational field to which the body is subjected and should not be confused with the center of inertia which is the barycenter of masses. In this article, we will identify the graphical and analytical methods for calculating the coordinates of a center of gravity of a plane figure and identify the formulas for the remarkable plane elements.

 INTRODUCTION

The center of gravity of a structure is the point of application of the resultant of its weight. Locating a structure's center of gravity is therefore crucial in construction.

The center of gravity of a structure can be determined graphically or by calculation, by breaking it down into simple elements whose centers of gravity are recalled.

Expressions for moment of inertia, moment of resistance and radius of gyration, useful quantities for structural design, are quoted.
