1.1 Types
Tower cranes fall into two main categories, depending on whether the rotating mechanism is located at the top or bottom of the mast. These types are known respectively as :
GME: modular tower crane ;
GMA: automated assembly crane.
The GME crane family includes cranes with jib and counter-jib, including :
Tie-rod cranes (also known as "cable-stayed" cranes);
cranes without tie rods (flat top or topless);
jib cranes, sometimes used on skyscrapers (smaller footprint and smaller working area).
