5. The challenges of developing heating networks
Over the next few years, heating networks will need to be significantly developed, modernized, extended and densified, in order to contribute to France's energy transition objectives. Heat accounts for half of all final energy consumption.
The residential and tertiary sectors are by far the biggest consumers of heat, accounting for 2/3 of national consumption. What's more, 80% of this energy is consumed in the form of heat, essentially produced from non-renewable energy sources.
In order to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen its energy independence, France needs to increase the renewable share of its energy production to 23% by 2020, with heat accounting for half of this target.
