1.1 Role

The casing acts as a support, transmitting forces to the machine bed, acting as an envelope, providing protection against external agents and guiding ventilation air; it also sometimes acts as a heat exchanger, as in the case of cast casings for finned motors or closed tube motors.

In some cases, such as in DC machines and in the inverter alternator, the frame can also serve as the magnetic circuit.
