9.1 Assembly of laminations in magnetic circuits

Transformer construction is a complex and technically-economically-optimized process. The sheet metal that makes up the core is the starting point for dimensioning. Then come the conductors (copper/aluminum), the insulation, the cooling systems, the space requirements, the environmental impact, sometimes the need to capitalize on losses, and so on.

A transformer's magnetic circuit consists of an assembly of laminations whose primary function is to channel the flow of magnetic induction. The aim is to optimize energy conversion (power transformer) or information transmission (instrument transformer) between systems with different voltages and currents. This assembly may be the result of a stack of cut sheet metal...
