5. Lithium copper oxide batteries

5.1 General

Invented and patented in France by Jean-Paul Gabano [30] , the lithium-copper oxide (Li/CuO) battery is a solid-cathode battery. Copper oxide, which has one of the highest volumetric capacities at 4,260 Ah/dm 3 , seems well suited to the production of high energy density batteries. Although its open-circuit voltage is around 2.25 V, its operating voltage is only around 1.5 V, making it compatible with conventional batteries. However, the undeniable advantage of this battery lies in its use at very low discharge currents; at these low speeds, the user can take advantage of the high volumetric capacity of the cathode material.
