Overview

ABSTRACT

Today power electronics holds a key place in ensuring the energy efficiency of critical electrical systems in defense, healthcare, transport, energy and finance, where electrical safety and continuity of service are vitally important. The overall reliability of power electronic converters is a major issue that has to be addressed right from the design stage. Power semi-conductors are clearly the weakest devices in the chain, whether or not they cause a failure. Power electronics designers are the leading experts developing the necessary approach to overall reliability for power converters. After a general introduction, this article presents the classical failure modes and the main solutions that provide safety capabilities.

 INTRODUCTION

This article is the first part of an introduction to voltage inverter reliability. The authors present the main fault modes and safety principles. The second article [D3180] covers the main redundancy structures and reconfiguration principles. The two articles have been written so as to form a coherent introductory package; nevertheless, in terms of form, they can be approached independently according to the reader's needs.
