1.1 Functional classes of variable reluctance devices

Converting mechanical energy into electrical energy by "reluctance variation" involves modifying the self-inductance of a coil, or the mutual inductance of several coils judiciously supplied, by moving a part made of ferromagnetic material.

This conversion principle lends itself to the realization of several classes of devices, which can perform various functions:

  • electrical machines, whose function is to continuously or quasi-continuously transform electrical power into mechanical power, or vice versa;

  • actuators, which transform electrical information into mechanical movement;...
