3. Quantitative analysis of winding properties

3.1 Magnetomotive force produced by the windings

The magnetomotive force (MMF) of a winding is defined as the cumulative sum of ampere-turns encountered when moving along the air gap.

Each time it passes a notch, the MMF is algebraically increased by the value of the total current present in said notch. This is obviously a periodic function. The advantage of the MMF concept is that it is governed by currents, which are of course the sources of the magnetic field. If the circuit is not saturated, the induction will be directly proportional to it. If the circuit is saturated, the induction will be directly proportional to it; otherwise, which is the general case, it will have to be multiplied by the permeance of the complete...
