 INTRODUCTION

This article deals with multiphase windings in AC rotating machines. For the sake of simplicity, we have limited ourselves to the case of three-phase windings, which are by far the most widespread. The theoretical developments, which are described in great detail, can be easily generalized to any other number of phases. The windings described here are those found in the stator of synchronous and asynchronous machines, and in the rotor of slip-ring asynchronous machines. They are designed to create a rotating magnetic field when supplied by a three-phase voltage or current system. The same principles could of course be transposed to schemes developed on a flat surface, to create a sliding magnetic field for use in linear motors, for example.

Qualitative, quantitative and practical aspects are discussed in turn. For ease of understanding, most of the diagrams are shown expanded, to simplify representation of the front connections. As for the cross-sectional diagram, it is generally presented as shown in figure 1 .
